The Green Dreams of St. Angela School

September update:

  • The tuckpointing of the south wall of the original school building, which included repairing, cleaning, sealing, and a coat of paint, is complete!

  • The build-out and planting of the south east corner of the campus (Potomac and Massasoit), and the placement of a sign, is complete!

  • The other main element in this quadrant of the Potomac field, a garden has been planted, and the statue of St. Angela, the main focus, has been restored to her rightful home!  Four benches will be placed near the statue later this fall.

Still on the list:

South Wall Mural

The wall is all ready for the mural (one possible design is the Rose Window) but we will need some help with the cost. The approximate cost of the mural:  $7,200.

Shade for classrooms
It will be some time before the trees that we are planting provide shade for the children.  We hope to cover the outdoor classroom with colorful shade sail, or gazebos so that the boys and girls can be outside even on the warm days of summer school.  A sail would cost approximately $6,000 to $8,000.

Outdoor fitness equipment

Our older scholars, fourth grade and up, have had no place to play outside, or to spend gym classes.  The field along Menard will provide soccer and baseball space—as well as room for obstacle courses, etc.  Our dream is to add a fitness course, with equipment like parallel bars and a balance beam, in the field along Potomac.  These items could be added incrementally if necessary; the approximate cost for a dozen pieces would be $18,000.

The bricks so far

We planted and blessed 159 engraved bricks in Spring 2018 on the periphery of our Menard field and about 40 more in Spring 2019.  We've taken these photos so that you can see your brick -- and the bricks of so many friends and classmates but we do hope you'll come see them in person.  Please let us know if you have questions by calling the Advancement Office at 773.626.2655.

The next brick orders will be placed October 14, 2019 and January 15, 2020.

The Gradual Greening:  May 2017 - Summer 2018

Our Green Dreams Partner:  Tari Delisi

We are extremely fortunate to have shared our Green Dreams with Tari Delisi of Delisi Designs, a partner who worked tirelessly to help us shape a vision for St. Angela campus and then to realize that vision.

Tari did what we expected: met with us, learned about our community and our goals for the new space. She designed gardens, chose plant materials and, as the project manager, contacted vendors, arranged for deliveries and supervised installations.

All that would have been a wonderful gift for us.

But Tari did not stop there: Tari showed up regularly to weed and water; she became a strong advocate for us, going so far as to find agencies—including the City of Chicago—to donate materials (and sometimes services) to help us realize our dreams.

She has adjusted plans downward when the budget required it; she has found alternatives when circumstances demanded it. And throughout this process she has been optimistic, gracious and enthusiastic.

Thanks, Tari!

“Finally,
brothers and sisters,
whatever is true,
whatever is honorable,
whatever is right,
whatever is pure,
whatever is lovely,
whatever is
admirable —
if anything
is excellent
or praiseworthy —
think on
these things.”
